Wallgate indestructible toilets installed at high security mental health facility
(17/10/2008)
60 indestructible toilets are currently being installed at Kent House, a high security mental health facility inside Broadmoor hospital. Kent House provides single room accommodation for 60 men with severe mental illness. Toilet and washing facilities are provided in each room, and it is these which are being replaced.
The new anti-ligature wash basins, toilet pans and electronic controls are being manufactured at the Wiltshire-based firm, Wallgate Ltd, for supply to the psychiatric unit near Crowthorne.
Operations Manager Mark Trapnell, from Wallgate, says: "This is a fantastic opportunity for the company. We have been Broadmoor's sole sanitary ware suppliers for many years. The current building is very old and the rooms are fitted with old-style institutional steel toilet pans. The wash basins are also very small and are fitted with normal old-style taps. The toilet pans and the wash basins are not only very dated, but they are potentially dangerous and could assist self harm."
"Wallgate are helping to normalise daily living conditions and reducing the risk of self-harm by replacing everything with new, safer and more attractive resin units. These products not only reduce the risk of self harm and intentional damage, but they are also durable, hard wearing and more cost effective in the long run. Refurbishment will make for a much safer environment at Kent House."
Wallgate Limited is already talking to secure hospitals in the United States and other Mental Health Care Trusts in the NHS about their requirements for anti ligature hygiene facilities. The company has recently invested in £300,000 worth of tooling equipment to meet growing demand for its hygiene products.
