On average, a UK home uses approximately 150 litres of water a day so it is little wonder that the media continues to bombard us with hints on how to reduce water wastage. These include installing water timers, turning off taps whilst we brush our teeth or even implementing a harvesting system where water can be re-used elsewhere. We all enjoy a long, leisurely bath and a relaxed shower, but these water-thirsty luxuries are under threat as we look to conserve water in our homes.

Erol Donmez, managing director for VitrA, comments: “It’s not just consumers who have the responsibility to help conserve water; bathroom manufacturers must take note of the world’s shrinking water supply and subsequently create sanitaryware which reduces waste.

“We’ve worked with organic designer Ross Lovegrove to create VitrA MOD. The range is designed to tackle the hot topic of water conservation and make it easier for us to do our bit for the environment without impacting on our daily lives. We anticipate the range will offer a globally practical solution to water conservation for most cultures.”

The MOD basins are purposefully shallow to prevent excessive use of water and are also thinner than the average basin, reducing firing time, packaging and ultimately weight to allow the product to be transported more energy efficiently. Meanwhile, the washbasin faucet has a reduced diameter stem to cut down on water use.

Another easy way to conserve water is to install a WC with a dual flush. Erol Donmez adds: “The average WC uses more water than any other single fixture in the home - about 13 litres in one go. In comparison dual flush WC’s use just six litres for a full flush and four for a reduced option, more than halving the amount going down the drain. A number of WC’s by VitrA incorporate a dual flush system including Retro, Form 500 and Matrix or, a urinal in VitrA’s matrix range caters for all male households as it uses much less water than a traditional WC.”

VitrA also reduces the need for using excessive amounts of water when cleaning sanitaryware. Every product comes with an option to protect it with VitrAclean, a special double glazing process which increases surface tension, making it easier for water to flow off the surface of ceramic, taking dirt and limescale with it.

The VitrAclean glaze eliminates the need for harsh cleaning materials and heavy duty washing, keeping products stain-free for years to come. In addition to creating a hygienic bathroom space for time-poor consumers, VitrAclean is also environmentally friendly.
